Developing a premium WA malt barley brand in Asian markets

With beer consumption on the rise in South East Asia, the South East Premium Wheat Growers’ Association (SEPWA) is working to generate a brand identity for Western Australian malting barley in the rapidly-growing Asian brewing sector.
The Esperance-based grain grower group will develop a working relationship between the Asian-based malting company, Intermalt, and farmers of the Esperance Port Zone to help establish WA as a reputable supplier of premium malt barley to Asian brewers and food processors.
SEPWA will provide malt barley samples to Intermalt to assess malting performance, and gain market feedback, so end-user market information can be integrated with on-farm agronomics to improve growers’ understanding of supply chain management.
The $17.4 million Grower Group R&D Grants Program is a major component of the Agricultural Sciences R&D Fund managed by DAFWA.
