Strawberries

Western Australian strawberries are grown on about 170 hectares, mostly in the East Wanneroo, Carabooda and Bullsbrook areas north of Perth and provide most local needs as well as about 80% of total strawberry exports from Australia.

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia has three industry-funded strawberry projects:

  • WA Strawberry Selection which aims to produce new varieties
  • working with Vietnamese growers to improve their understanding and practice in irrigation and nutrient management
  • mediterranean fruit fly trapping which aims to prove strawberries are not a host of Medfly to facilitate access to interstate and overseas markets.
