Industrial hemp is a potentially important crop for Western Australia, but its production is closely controlled under the Industrial Hemp Act 2004. Growers require a licence which is issued by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
Fibre extracted from the stems of the plants can be used to make textiles, paper and rope, and oil from the seeds can be used for fuel and medicines.
