Chemical control options can be found below. For other methods of control please refer to the declared plant control handbook.

Recommended herbicides

  • Picloram
  • Metsulfuron
  • Glyphosate
  • Trounce®

Herbicide: Picloram (Group I) (various trade names: see APVMA link)

Active ingredient

75g/L picloram + 300g/L 2,4-D

Rate of dilution for spot spraying

1:150

Rate of product/10L water

65mL

Time of application

Flowering and fruiting

Remarks and other control methods

High volume: thorough coverage essential

  • Seedlings controlled by 20mL bromoxynil/10L water
  • Seedlings and adult plants controlled by 50mL 2,4-D amine/L of water after cutting
  • Glyphosate at 150mL/10L water is also useful

Herbicide: Metsulfuron (Group B) (various trade names: see APVMA link)

Active ingredient

600g/kg Metsulfuron methyl

Rate of dilution for spot spraying

1g/10L

Rate of product/10L water

1g

Wetting agent

BS-1000 @ 1:1000 or Pulse @ 1:500

Time of application

When bushes actively growing

Remarks and other control methods

  • Spray to thoroughly wet all foliage
  • Minimise contact with desirable plants

Herbicide: Glyphosate (Group M) (various trade names: see APVMA link)

Active ingredient

  1. 360g/L glyphosate
  2. 490/500g/L glyphosate
  3. 540g/L glyphosate
  4. 680g/kg glyphosate

Other concentrations of glyphosate available

Rate of product/10L water

  1. 100mL of the 360g/L formulation
  2. 70mL of the 490/500g/L formulation
  3. 65mL of the 540g/L formulation
  4. 50g of the 680g/kg formulation

Adjust rates for another concentrations of glyphosate

Rate of product/ha

Not recommended

Wetting agent dilution

Pulse 200mL/100L

Time of application

Actively growing. Best results achieved at peak flowering.

Remarks

  • Use half rate on smaller plants, for example, 50mL of 360g/L formulation or equivalent rate of other formulations
  • Do not treat drought stressed plants
  • Roundup® Biactive or Razor® are preferred products in wet areas or near shallow water, as these contain surfactants that are of low toxicity to aquatic animals
  • There are other formulations of glyphosate that are approved for use near aquatic areas. Check labels before using.

Herbicide: Trounce®

Active ingredient

10g/kg metsulfuron methyl (Group B) + 835g/kg glyphosate (Group M)

Rates of dilution for spot spraying

173g (1 packet)/100L

Wetting agent dilution

1:1000 non-ionic surfactants such as BS-1000

Time of application

Actively growing

Remarks

  • Wet foliage thoroughly
  • Minimise contact with desirable species
  • The use of the wetting agent Pulse® @ 200mL/100L water may improve control
