WA Horticulture Exports - Where we can make the difference

WA horticulture industries are well positioned to capture the growing demand and opportunities in the overseas market. However knowing the strength and weakness of each industry and addressing the issues is important in capitalising on this opportunity.

The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia have produced a report " WA Horticulture Export Markets" to analyse the strength and weaknesses of different potential industries and suggests some areas of improvement.

In the report, which is available to download from the right hand side of the page, the following fourteen industries are analysed against fourteen indicators

Apples
Avocados
Carrots
Cauliflower and broccoli
Celery
Grapes
Melons
Oranges
Plums
Seed potatoes
Strawberries
Truffles
Potatoes other than seeds
Wine

Some of the report findings are that avocados and strawberries are found to be high ranking for a number of indicators, however market access barriers need to be addressed.

Apples and carrots will benefit from identifying value adding opportunities. Plums, melons and grapes will benefit from horizontal integration. Diversification of export markets to include premium value importers would be an area of improvement for celery.
