The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development contracted AEC Group Pty Ltd (AEC) to undertake a pre-feasibility study into the creation of new and innovative beef supply chain models in Thailand.

A report on New and Innovative Beef Supply Chains in Thailand considers the potential industry benefits of diverting existing live export cattle into a dedicated supply chain featuring leading technology and best management practice.

A range of potential supply chain models were considered, with detailed analysis focussing on importing, holding, intensively feeding, processing and distributing Western Australian live exported cattle to Thai in-country and regional export markets.

The pre-feasibility study considers the potential for increased competitiveness, market penetration, and value-adding production made possible through the creation of a dedicated international supply chain for WA beef.

It is envisioned this study will serve to inform and lay the foundation for the opportunity, allowing for more detailed feasibility work to be undertaken by private sector proponents.

The study and copies of presentations made at the seminar 'Western Australia-Thailand: Emerging beef supply chains in Asia' held on 22 February 2016 at the department theatrette are available as attachments on the right hand side of this page.

This pre-feasibility study was made possible by the department's Northern Beef Futures project, which concluded on 31 October 2017.
