Exemptions

Some horses may be eligible for exemptions to some of the above requirements if they are from liver fluke disease exempt areas or are horses of WA origin returning to WA within specified timeframes.

For ‘Declarations for Exemptions’ forms, see Table 2 on the forms for importing livestock webpage.

Cattle tick testing and treatment requirements

Horses being moved from an area other than a Cattle Tick Free Area must be inspected and certified free of cattle tick and undergo an approved treatment prior to movement.

Horses from properties within the Northern Territory which are not under movement restrictions due to chemical-resistant ticks may move into the Cattle Tick Infected Area of WA without treatment or inspection for ticks.

Fees and charges for horse importation

The list of fees and charges for importing horses can be found on the DPIRD importing livestock webpage.

Horse owners in WA must be registered

Horses are considered livestock and owners must be registered with DPIRD, even if the horse is kept as a pet. For more information about how to register, go to the DPIRD livestock registration webpage.
