Increase feedbase production and quality of subtropical grass based pastures

This project will investigate the management of subtropical grass pastures on the south coast and the Northern Agricultural Region of Western Australia. The goal is to lift pasture production and quality, particularly through increased winter growth and higher legume density.

Funded by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA), the project will:

  • evaluate establishment techniques, times of sowing and management requirements of prospective temperate legume species into existing subtropical grass pastures on a range of soil types
  • evaluate the feasibility and economics of strategies to manage seasonality of forage supply from subtropical grass based pastures.

The project is due to be completed on 31 December 2016. Results for the south coast will be summarised in a technical booklet that will be available in both digital and hard copy. The findings from the Northern Agricultural Region will be published as a series of webpages.
