Landholders, residents and agriculture industry groups are invited to attend a public workshop on the management of declared pests in the Peel Harvey region.

The workshop will be represented by the Shires of Serpentine/Jarrahdale, Murray, Waroona, Harvey and the City of Mandurah, in addition to landcare groups from Waroona and Serpentine/Jarrahdale Landcare and the Department of Agriculture and Food.

Spokesman for the represented groups, Tom Lerner, said the purpose of the workshop was to provide an open forum for the community to participate in the future direction of pest management in the Peel region.

“A desired outcome of the workshop is the establishment of a community group responsible for managing the declared pests that affect our region, as no individual interest could effectively manage the issue on its own,” Mr Lerner said.

“Local pest issues that are likely to be among the first to be tackled by the group include cotton bush, foxes and rabbits.”

Department of Agriculture and Food invasive species manager for the South West, Lindsay Strange, said the department was committed to working with landholder groups to develop a coordinated approach to declared pest management in their area.

“The workshop is about engaging the community and industry to take collective ownership of the management of widespread, established pests to support their individual efforts to manage declared pests on their land,” Mr Strange said.

The community workshop will be held at 6.30 pm on 28 November at the Pinjarra Civic Centre.
