Supporting our Farming Super Heroes is the focus of the Department of Agriculture and Food’s display at this year’s IGA Perth Royal Show.

The department’s exhibition in the Centenary Pavilion aims to inform people about the vital range of support it provides throughout the agriculture and food supply chain - from farms to supermarkets and beyond.

Department director general Rob Delane said it was important to recognise the diverse work of farmers and the role the department plays in supporting their success.

“In addition to maintaining the profitability and growth of their farming business, such as grain or livestock production, farmers are also responsible for managing land and water resources and protecting our State from biosecurity threats,” Mr Delane said.

“The department supports the success of the sector through research and development, biosecurity activities to keep our industries safe from pests and diseases, and expanding market opportunities here and overseas.”

Mr Delane said the IGA Perth Royal Show provided a fantastic opportunity to capture the attention of the WA community and promote the work being done.

This year, the department’s Centenary Pavilion display includes plenty of activities for children young and old, and the opportunity to chat one-on-one with department staff.

Visitors will be able to take a Super Hero Supporter Challenge and see some of the super gadgets and research used to support farmers every day.  A food match-up game and spot-the-difference puzzle will also test people’s ‘super powers’ of concentration and observation.

At the Yellow Brick Road stop, which will once again be part of the display, visitors will be able to collect a small rake and spade set to help get them started on their own fruit and vegetable garden.

The department will also have a Buy West Eat Best display and tastings in the IGA Fresh in WA Pavilion.

Many children are expected to visit the display, taking advantage the State Government’s initiative to provide free entry for children 12 years and under when accompanied by an adult.
