The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) initiated a pest risk analysis (PRA) to consider biosecurity risks associated with the import of fresh table grape bunches from other Australian states and territories.

As part of the process, the department prepared a draft pest categorisation of pests and diseases potentially associated with fresh table grape bunches (Vitis spp.).

Consultation on the report closed on 14 February 2015.

DAFWA is considering stakeholder submissions, and will incorporate relevant information into the final pest categorisation report as appropriate.

A formal pest risk analysis (PRA) for the importation of fresh table grape bunches into Western Australia was initiated on 15 September 2011. A PRA is a tool used by the department to consider biosecurity risks.

This draft pest categorisation is the classification phase that identifies pests and diseases which require further consideration in the PRA to estimate the level of biosecurity risk they pose to Western Australia.

The pest categorisation process identifies pests and diseases that are:

  • absent from Western Australia
  • associated with the table grape bunch pathway
  • have potential to establish in Western Australia
  • would be of economic concern should they establish in Western Australia.

The pest categorisation process evaluated 622 invertebrate and pathogen organisms associated with viticulture production in Australia.

From this list of potential pests, 14 invertebrate and 13 pathogen organisms met the above criteria to satisfactorily meet the definition of a quarantine pest according to the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

‘A pest of potential economic importance to the area endangered thereby and not yet present there, or present but not widely distributed and being officially controlled.’

The quarantine pests identified in the final pest categorisation will undergo risk assessments to determine the unrestricted risk of entry, establishment and spread of the pests in Western Australia. Phytosanitary risk mitigation measures need to be considered for pests which pose an unacceptable risk to Western Australia. Risk mitigation options are considered for efficacy and compliance with international and national obligations.
