For many years the import of fresh table grapes into Western Australia was banned due to the possibility of introducing certain important pests and diseases.

A pest risk analysis of the import of fresh table grapes into Western Australia from other Australian states and territories was initiated on 15 September 2011. The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia wrote to registered stakeholders announcing the formal commencement of the risk analysis.

Registered stakeholders were advised about the start of a pest risk analysis for the import of fresh table grapes into Western Australia from other Australian states and territories in September 2011.

Below is an extract from the letter sent to the registered stakeholders.

"This letter announces the formal commencement of a pest risk analysis considering the importation of fresh table grapes into Western Australia.

Grape fruit, seed and plant material have been prohibited entry into Western Australia from all sources for many years. The original prohibition was implemented due to concerns about phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifolii) and downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola). In 2008, Phomopsis viticola and grapevine fanleaf virus were added to the regulations and downy mildew was removed pending the completion of a pest risk analysis.

A formal pest risk analysis for the importation of fresh table grapes bunches has now commenced. The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia's Plant Biosecurity Policy Group will consider the importation of table grapes from other Australian states and territories and international trading partners.

A draft pest risk analysis including recommendations pertaining to the import of fresh table grapes will be released for stakeholder consultation. Stakeholder submissions will be reviewed by the department in the context of consistency with accepted practices, technical justification and national obligations. Should any new or important information come to light that may have a significant effect on the analysis, this information will be incorporated into the final document. The final document will be circulated to stakeholders."
