The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is pleased to announce that the Asian Market Success project has been extended until 30 June 2023.

Since 2015-16, the Asian Market Success project project has delivered information and export capability building programs to more than one hundred WA agribusinesses; distributed nearly $3.0 million in grant funding to support WA businesses to develop value chains and new business models; and invested in research to enhance international competitiveness such as the Parnering for Customer Value initiative.

The extension of the Asian Market Success project, announced as part of the State Government’s 2019-20 budget, will enable the project to continue to provide WA agribusiness with additional research for expansion into premium Asian markets, capacity building and the delivery of an export oriented grants program.

Background

In 2015-16, the now Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development commenced a three year, $6 million Asian Market Success project funded by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program. The project provided WA agrifood businesses with the confidence to invest in accessing and developing high value, premium export markets in Asia.  Following an initial extension of twelve months, the Asian Market Success project has been successful in securing a further four years of funding from the State Government.

The future of the WA agrifood sector is highly dependent on exporting.  Accordingly, Asian Market Success will provide a platform to transform the approach WA agrifood businesses will apply to exporting so that they are internationally competitive and therefore able to capture Asia’s high value, premium export markets.

Asian Market Success will assist Western Australian agrifood businesses to move beyond the rhetoric of the opportunities presented by Asia’s discerning middle class consumers, to the realisation of these opportunities. It will achieve this by taking a new approach to aligning WA businesses with targeted market opportunities to become preferred suppliers of premium quality food products.
This will in turn deliver long term, sustainable benefits to the State.

Project activities

Asian Market Success aims to assist Western Australian agrifood businesses to succeed in the highly competitive Asian marketplace and generate considerable flow-on benefits to regional communities.

Project activities include:

Target Market Opportunities report

The Target Market Opportunities Report identifies growth opportunities in premium Asian markets for products directly related with WA’s production and supply conditions.

This was achieved by an assessment of what premium food products, from temperate and Mediterranean environments, Asian consumers want, WA’s competitive advantage in these food products, and identification of key in-market import partners for our WA agrifood businesses.

Investment Ready: WA Agribusiness report

This Report assists WA agrifood businesses to become investment ready by identifying:

  • investment options available to restructure, diversify and grow businesses
  • business models that attract preferred investors for their business
  • investors positioned to commit capital to WA agrifood business development opportunities within Asia.

Partnering for Customer Value

This initiative commissioned a series of eleven case studies that identify patterns of success in business management that have the potential to enhance the international competitiveness of WA's agrifood businesses.  These cross-sector case studies show real-world examples of how partnering along the value chain can enhance export capacity and competitiveness.

In November 2019, the initiative and three of the case studies were launched by the Asian Market Success project featuring Professor Andrew Fearne and Dingley Dell Pork's Mark Hawyard at a series of events in Perth.
