The Sheep Industry Leadership Council (SILC) was formed by the Western Australian (WA) state government in 2011 with a charter of providing strategy and leadership for the sheep industry. A broad industry consultative process was undertaken in early 2016 to review the strategic plan and develop the suite of activities that will be undertaken to deliver on it.

The review highlighted the need for greater ownership and accountability to meat processors, wool and livestock exporters and lobby and grower groups, and prompted a process of re-vamping SILC so that it might become more representative of the entire WA sheep supply chain.

The SILC board adopted a new constitution, name (Sheep Alliance of Western Australia), membership and accountability structure and mounted a fresh call for directors in order to broaden the reach and influence of the board. The official transition to the Alliance took place in July 2016, with a founding membership of 42 industry entities. Its operation is supported by Royalties for Regions through the Sheep Industry Business Innovation project.

The Alliance members have formally endorsed the following directors:

  • Dr Craig Heggaton, chairman
  • Dr Tim Watts, vice chairman
  • John Edwards, Exporter, Fremantle
  • Richard Coole, Producer, Kojonup
  • Andrew Ritchie, farm consultant, Darkan
  • Bindi Murray, producer, Woodanilling
  • Wayne Pech, producer, Gnowangerup
  • Professor David Pethick, Researcher
  • Andrew Lindsay, livestock and wool agent
  • Esther Jones, Executive Officer

For more information on the directors, please see the links to the right.

Membership of the Alliance is open to all entities that are key contributors to the sheep supply chain and/or actively working towards improving the profitability of the WA sheep industry and where membership is the business, not the individual. The membership base is diverse, bringing together growers, sheep exporters, wool exporters, processors, universities and educational institutions, wool and livestock brokers, ag consultants and various other service providers supporting the sheep industry.
