This page provides instructions on how to lay rabbit baits when using a towed disc drive.

Instructions

  • Check that tyres are of equal pressure.
  • Ensure that disc bearings having a grease nipple are lubricated and the disc turns freely. If disc bearings are sealed ensure disc runs freely and bearings are run quietly.
  • Raise the hopper to maximum and verify that outlet port disc rotates freely. If necessary lubricate and work disc until it rotates freely (see Figure 1 below).
  • Ensure outlet port disc safety pin is in place and outlet port is closed off (see Figure 1 below).

  • Unhook travelling safety chain and let hopper assembly down to rest on the ground (see Figures 2 and 3 below).

  • Open the hopper cover and pour in a single measure of the oats (6kg) that you intend to use.
  • Close and pin hopper cover.
  • Raise hopper to maximum and remove outlet port disc safety pin from outlet port disc (see Figure 4 below).

  • Lower the disc to the ground.
  • The machine is now ready to calibrate.

Calibration

  • The object of the calibration process is to achieve a distribution rate of 5-7kg bait material per kilometre of distance. Travel speed needs to be sufficiently high enough to evacuate the soil from the furrow without collapsing back into the furrow.
  • Sandy soils generally require a slightly higher speed than heavier soils.
  • Working in H 4x4 seems to be most comfortable using 1st or 2nd gear and travel at about 10-20km/hr.
  • Depth of furrow should be about 2-3cm deep. It is very important that the furrow is not too deep as rabbits do not like feeding when they cannot see about them.
  • The outlet port needs to be adjusted. This is achieved by adjusting the cable stop (see Figure 5 below).
