ESG and your business

Environmental, social and governance (ESG) represents a more holistic approach to doing business. At its heart, ESG aims to reduce environmental footprints (negative environmental impacts from consuming resources and producing waste) and increase the positive impacts that people, businesses, or operations have on communities and their environments.

ESG is gaining momentum, attention, and importance across the globe for all businesses and industry sectors.

Increasing pressure to prove and improve ESG behaviour and credentials is coming from all levels of the economic community. Regulators, lenders, retailers, consumers, and investors are actively turning away from unsustainable businesses and operations. However, ESG investing (sustainable investing, ethical investing, impact investing, socially responsible investing) is a rapidly growing market.

Businesses that adhere to ESG standards agree to conduct themselves ethically in those three areas and can demonstrate their claims and progress.

Although ESG is concerned with doing more of the good (e.g. investing in supporting your local community and environment) and less of the bad (e.g. causing pollution including greenhouse gas emissions), it should always aim to make financial sense, and achieve multiple economic and environmental co-benefits.

Businesses that adapt efficiently stand to benefit from improved investor interest, employee attraction and retention, sustainable financial success and more. However, the changing expectations on corporate behaviour can be challenging to navigate.
