My role in the department

I am Director of Sheep Industry Development as well as Project Manager for the Sheep Industry Business Innovation project – a $10 million project made possible by the state government’s Royalties for Regions program. Our project will assist the industry to build capacity to supply new markets for sheepmeat and live exports, particularly in nearby Asia and the Middle East, generating flow-on benefits to producers, industry, the regions, communities and the state economy. We aim to achieve this via two key strategies: 1) transforming the sheep supply chain to develop customer focused products for target markets, and 2) establishing a Sheep Business Centre, to be located in Katanning, with a focus for sheep business and technical innovation to assist the industry’s capacity to satisfy customer requirements.

My background

My passion for agriculture was ignited long ago, having been raised on the wheat-sheep-pork family farm at Dudinin, east of Narrogin. Freshly graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) from the University of Western Australia in 1978, I began my career with DAFWA – with a few short sabbaticals to pursue a PhD in pig nutrition, as well as some research work in the United Kingdom and with the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. Whilst in the role of manager of the pig research group (DAFWA) I travelled extensively through Asia and Europe providing nutrition support to the animal feed industry. In 2010 I was appointed Director of Livestock Innovation and have been in my current position since 2014.
