The Grower Group Research and Development (R&D) Grants Program awarded $6.7 million to 16 grower groups across Western Australia in its inaugural round. The grants are administered by the Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA) and supported by Royalties for Regions.

Capacity Building in the Northern Valleys Region
Organisation: West Midlands Group
Grower Group R&D Grant amount:$449,927

The West Midlands Group is in the heart of the large and diverse Northern Valleys agribusiness sector and will be working with growers to explore opportunities to increase production, capacity and the value of the produce coming from the region.

The project aims to better understand what is being produced in the region and when it is being delivered to market. Furthermore, locally-focussed advisors will provide resources and information to producers in the region, to help them identify market opportunity windows that may exist in both local and overseas export markets.

The West Midlands Group will become a local hub for information for growers about where they can improve their businesses as well as provide a forum for building networks and ensuring synergies with other projects are capitalised on.

The project will also begin to explore opportunities to promote the region’s produce and opportunities to value-add to pre-farmgate seconds or waste products.

The $17.4 million Grower Group R&D Grants Program is a major component of the Agricultural Sciences R&D Fund managed by DAFWA.
