My role in the department
Dr Mwenda is a Research Scientist on a DPIRD-GRDC investment project investigating agronomic practices that maintain the long-term benefits of soil amelioration. Research areas include the role of crop rotations in maintaining long-term benefits and profitability of amelioration, crop types that maximise productivity and profitability, seeding systems, the timing of amelioration, and the effects of soil amelioration on soil-borne pathogens.
My background
George has more than ten years of experience in agricultural research. He specialised in optimising biological nitrogen fixation in smallholder farms in Africa before joining Murdoch University for a PhD study on the Phaseolus vulgaris-rhizobia symbiosis. He joined DPIRD as a member of the Regional Research Agronomy project in 2019, investigating crop sequencing post amelioration and the impact of dry sowing on N fixation in chickpeas. Since 2020, he has primarily been focused on research into how growers can maintain the long-term benefits of soil amelioration.
