Impact of yellow spot on wheat yield 2016 trial report

The disease ratings for wheat varieties help decide what variety is best suited. Just as paddocks have differing disease and management histories, varieties have differing resistance levels. But less is known about how the ratings relate to yield losses.

Trials to understand the relationship between disease levels and disease resistance ratings for yellow spot will help link these factors to yield. By understanding the relative yield losses caused by yellow spot, better varieties and disease management decisions can be made.

Disease pressure treatments
  1. High disease pressure - 3000 spores/mL
  2. Medium disease pressure - five times reduction in inoculum
  3. Low disease pressure - 10 times reduction in inoculum
  4. Very low disease pressure - through natural spread
  5. Protected - fungicide at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after seeding
Inoculation
  • Infection to be established using conidial suspensions in conjunction with approaching rain fronts.
  • Four applications starting four to five weeks after sowing and after 10-14 day intervals usually results in good disease expression.
  • Irrigation applied at dusk maintains leaf wetness through the night and facilitates disease establishment.
