Yield losses from wheat leaf rust 2016 trial report

The disease ratings for wheat varieties for leaf rust help decide what variety is best suited. Just as paddocks have differing disease and management histories, varieties have differing resistance levels, but less is known about how the ratings relate to yield losses.

Trials to understand the relationship between disease levels and disease resistance ratings for leaf rust will help link these factors to yield. By understanding the relative yield losses caused by leaf rust, better varieties and disease management decisions can be made.

Treatments

Variety treatments:

  1. Spear - Susceptible to very susceptible
  2. Stiletto - Susceptible
  3. Mace - Moderately susceptible
  4. Correll - Moderately susceptible to susceptible
  5. Fortune - Moderately resistant to moderately susceptible

Disease pressure treatments:

  1. High disease pressure - no fungicides
  2. Medium disease pressure - one spray six weeks after seeding (Folicur 1mL/L)
  3. Low disease pressure - one spray, six weeks after seeding (Folicur 2mL/L)
  4. Protected - four sprays 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks after sowing (2mL/L)

Inoculation:

  • Leaf rust pathotype Lr 76-1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12 + Lr37.
  • Inoculate early planted spreaders with spore suspensions of the Lr76 pathotype (8g/L of paraffin oil) using a micron ULV sprayer.
  • In addition, transplant leaf rust infected seedlings within spreader runs (two per metre).
