Control methods for Mexican poppy, Argemone mexicana, a declared pest in Western Australia. These control methods are also applicable to control the non declared weed A. ochraleuca. Report the presence of Argemone mexicana before undertaking a control measure.

Cereal crops:

Pre-sowing/pre-emergence: Triasulfuron®

Post-emergent: Jaguar®, Bromoxynil + MCPA, 2.4-D LV ester, 2.4-D amine

Pasture:

Seedling-rosette: Spinnaker®, Jaguar®

Non-selective: Glyphosate, Paraquat

Herbicide: 2,4-D LV ester (Group I) (various trade names: see APVMA link)

  • Grub individual plants.
  • Paraquat (Gramoxone) 1-2L/ha, or glyphosate 500mL + 2,4-D LV ester 500mL at flowering to prevent seed formation. Do not use within 5km of a commercial vineyard or tomato garden.
  • A 800g/L formulation is available and requires a APVMA permit to use between September and April.
