Dairy cattle

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development dairy program is focused on maintaining and developing a resilient industry. The department collaborates with producers, processors and peak industry bodies to deliver research and development programs aimed at improving profitability and reducing industry’s environmental footprint.

The dairy industry is currently located in the far south-west of the state, mainly along the west coast south of Perth to Albany. Some 160 dairy farms produce about 350 million litres of milk each year, much of which is consumed locally as either fresh milk or short shelf-life products.

Despite its relatively small size, Western Australia’s dairy industry is reputed for its innovation and high quality products. These are key to the industry’s transformation strategy to double milk production by 2025 to supply the increasing demand of Asian markets for high quality dairy products.

The department is working to identify potential overseas partners who are interested in investing in the WA dairy industry.
