Goats
The majority of goats in Western Australia are located in the southern rangelands, with approximately 84 000 sold in 2011/2012 to a value of $3.5 million per annum. The WA industry is primarily based on harvesting naturalised ‘rangeland’ goats to supply domestic markets and the international markets of North America and Asia.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development supports industry through the management of supply chains and biosecurity systems that ensure a high quality product is available to meet market specifications. Rearing goats is the best available livestock option for many pastoralists in the southern rangelands.
