My role in the department
Matthew works at the Managed Environment Facility in Merredin, which hosts trials looking at crop characterisation and improvement for water-limited environments in Australia. He also carries out general farm and trial operatios for the Merredin Dryland Research Station.
Matthew’s main role is trial work where he is part of the team responsible for preparation, seeding and trial management to harvest. He is responsible for measuring growth scores, leaf area analysis, NDVI using GreenSeeker, crop canopy temperatures and harvest sample processing. During the growing season he monitors the trials for pests and diseases and carries out weed control. He also maintains and operates the farm machinery and experimental equipment, including irrigation and rainout shelters.
My background
Matthew completed Year 12 at the WA College of Agriculture in Cunderdin and started work at DPIRD in 2012. Prior to leaving school he had casual jobs in vehicle maintenance and repairs as well as basic steel work. He also worked as a Receival Point Officer for CBH at Tammin.
