MySoil: Non saline semi-wet soils (Swan Coastal Plain)

Non saline soils waterlogged to 30 centimetres (cm) for a major part of the year.

Broad scale map (1:250 000) of the Swan coastal plain Agzone showing the distribution of non saline semi wet soils. Distribution is scattered from Lancelin to Dunsborough with 50–100%.

Distinguishing features

Topsoil

  • Topsoil dark grey to black organically stained sands.
  • Mildly acidic to neutral.

Subsoil

  • Saturated below 30cm for the majority of time.
  • Sands, loams and clays.
  • Clays often has pale green, grey, blue gleyed surfaces associated with iron reduction.

Constraints

The following data has been derived from actual site samples taken. These results are recorded in this Excel spreadsheet.

Table 2 Common management constraints key
Rating Implications
Not applicable (n/a) No constraints identified
Minor

Minor constraint - reduces crop yields in some years

Major

Major constraint - reduces crop yields in most years

Severe

Severe constraint - will always reduce crop yields
