A new round of workshops is available to help Wheatbelt growers better respond to business fluctuations and improve their bottom line.
The Department of Agriculture and Food has developed a free one-day Planning for Profit workshop as part of a suite of rural business capacity building workshops being offered throughout the State.
Department Regional Operations and Development executive director Peter Metcalfe said Planning for Profit workshops provided participants with the skills to strategically assess their businesses and identify opportunities to reduce losses in challenging years and increase profits in good years.
“The role of a grower is demanding and diverse – the person out driving a tractor during seeding and a truck during harvest is often the same person marketing their produce, arranging finance and making million-dollar business decisions,” Mr Metcalfe said.
“Farming is as challenging as ever, with a number of significant variable factors that impact on the business’s bottom line.
“The Planning for Profit workshop helps participants determine the most effective ways of increasing their profits by addressing key profit drivers including price, production, business and operating costs.
“Participants are also presented strategies to help them identify a good price for their business and scrutinise their inputs and business costs to identify where adjustments can be made.”
Mr Metcalfe said by the end of the workshop, participants would be better equipped to focus on improving their profitability as well as have a plan of action.

- Friday 15 February: Brookton
- Wednesday 20 February: Goomalling
- Thursday 21 February: Nungarin
- Wednesday 6 March: Ravensthorpe
- Thursday 7 March: Hyden
- Wednesday 20 March: Three Springs
- Thursday 21 March: Moora
- Wednesday 10 April: Gnowangerup
- Thursday 11 April: Wagin
- Tuesday 16 April: Newdegate
Interested growers can register by visiting workshops.agric.wa.gov.au and submitting an application form.
Rural businesses are also able to participate in cost-free Plan, Prepare and Prosper workshop and a one-day Plan, Prepare and Prosper Refresher workshop.
