Assess the risk of delayed canola sowing

Grain growers still intending to sow canola have been warned to assess the risk of yield losses if sowing opportunities are delayed, particularly in the low and medium rainfall zones.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has undertaken an analysis of the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) to identify optimum sowing windows for canola.

The research was undertaken with co-investment by the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

The modelling used local climate data from the past 41 years for 12 locations across the Grainbelt, from Geraldton to Gibson, and different soil types.

The analysis showed crops sown after April, particularly in the low and medium rainfall zones, were at increasing risk of yield losses due to heat and water stress during the grain filling period.

Department research officer Imma Farre said as a rule of thumb, the optimum sowing window for canola was in April for low and medium rainfall zones, while for high rainfall locations growers can plant up until the end of May.

Dr Farre said the analysis results varied, depending on rainfall zones and soil types (see graph.)

“On average, the yield loss on light soil for sowing in May compared to end of April was 27 kilograms per hectare per day delay in sowing (186 kg/ha/week), while on heavy soil the loss was 15 kg/ha/day (110 kg/ha/week),” she said.

“When making delayed sowing decisions it is also important to consider the chances of achieving a certain yield when sowing late for your location.”

Dr Farre said while growers in the high rainfall zone may be in a position to plant canola up to the end of May, those in other areas may need to consider alternatives like sowing cereals, legumes, pastures or leaving a paddock fallow. 

“For example, sowing canola at the end of May at Mullewa is on average likely to yield 700 kg/ha, which is break even at best,” she said.

Dr Farre said seed availability would be a determining factor, along with paddock preparation, stored soil moisture and season forecast.

“Cereals are the most likely alternative option but it is important to choose the right crop and variety to optimise the season forecast,” she said.

“Growers who have already prepared paddocks for canola with the herbicide Atrazine also need to be aware of the risk to cereal crops.

“Generally, oats and barley are more tolerant than wheat. If cereals are not an option, a pasture or leaving the paddock fallow may prove the most profitable option.”
