The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has hosted a key trade update for Western Australian grains industry stakeholders.
Western Australia’s grains industries underpin many rural and regional communities and are highly export focused.
The update, held yesterday (21 March) at the department’s South Perth office, brought together WA stakeholders to hear from national and State bodies.
These included the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, national industry body Grains Industry Market Access Forum, the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre and Grain Industry Association of WA.
Department Trade and Investment Executive Director Liam O’Connell said the WA grains and oilseeds industries were valuable to the WA agrifood sector, and bringing together State and Australian government and industry stakeholders to engage on market access was vital.
“This is part of ongoing work to ensure we are actively collaborating with key grains trade partners to address common priorities and issues, in order to take advantage of the opportunities,” Mr O’Connell said.
“Approximately 90 per cent of WA grains production is exported and most future growth will need to come from this trade.
“Given WA is the largest grain exporting State, it was great to have all the key government and industry players together in WA.”
