Possibility of desalinated Artesian water in Carnarvon - Grower Group R&D Grants Program

The Grower Group Research and Development (R&D) Grants Program awarded $6.7 million to 16 grower groups across Western Australia in its inaugural round. The grants are administered by the Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA) and supported by Royalties for Regions.

Grower Group R&D Grant amount: $48 000

The Carnarvon Growers Association will assess the potential for desalination of water in the Gascoyne River to increase the volume and security of water in the Gascoyne. 

By having a more consistent and better quality of supply of water, the high value salt sensitive horticulture crops will benefit and new market opportunities could present through businesses reaching scale to supply overseas market.

The assessment will involve reviewing the current body of knowledge around desalination, engaging  stakeholders, and the development of a  plan with cost of development and operation. 

The outcomes will increases awareness of the potential customers, costings and benefits of desalination to potentially attract investment to develop desalination.

The $17.4 million Grower Group R&D Grants Program is a major component of the Agricultural Sciences R&D Fund managed by DAFWA.
