The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will soon be carrying out public consultations in a number of key areas related to animal welfare.

The consultation on the Standards and Guidelines for the Health and Welfare of Dogs in WA closed on 7 June 2019.

A consultation on the implementing regulations for the national standards for Transport of Livestock and Livestock at Saleyards and Depots closed on 28 February 2020. A consultation summary report will be made available when all submissions have been considered. The implementation of national Standards and Guidelines has been made possible by amendments to the Animal Welfare Act 2002 (the Act), which were passed in November 2018.

The Department of Justice is seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the Act that will enable the proactive inspection of intensive animal farming operations, abattoirs and knackeries. These amendments form part of the State Government’s commitment to deter trespassers who have the intention of disrupting activities at these kinds of facilities. Changes to the Criminal Code and the Restraining Orders Act 1997 are also proposed.

More information about the proposed amendments, including details about how you can provide a submission, are available on the Department of Justice’s website.

The independent panel which is reviewing the operation and effectiveness of the Act is currently seeking written submissions to assist it in identifying key issues in animal welfare in Western Australia. The public consultation closes at 5pm on 25 November 2019. You can find out more, including how to make a submission, on this page.

Updates on the progress of these consultations will be made available as they occur.
