Page last updated: Friday, 5 June 2020 - 1:03pm

Please note: This content may be out of date and is currently under review.

The map below shows the current predicted dates of spore maturation and consequently the predicted risk of matching spore release with the susceptible stage of the crop. Spore showers will commence soon after the spores are mature in the fruiting bodies. The current forecast is based on weather data (1st January to 31th May 2020) from the nearest weather station. Projections are based on an assumption of four millimeters (mm) of rainfall per week from now on.

Canola blackleg spore maturity forecast for Western Australia

Canola Blackleg Spore maturity map

What does this map show?

  • Location specific spore maturity prediction date (that is, 21/4 means that spores are expected to be mature and to begin spreading from stubble to canola seedlings on 21 April, based on rainfall to date and anticipated rainfall of at least 4mm per week in the coming weeks at that location).
  • Different coloured circles indicate the current risk of blackleg (red: high, pink : high- moderate, black: moderate, blue: low and green: very low)

Suggestions

Low

Consider applying seed dressing if varieties below MR-MS are sown.

Medium

Consider applying recommended fungicide if varieties below MR are sown.

High

Consider applying recommended fungicide if varieties below MR-R are sown.

In high disease pressure situations seed dressing alone may not be sufficient in providing adequate protection from disease. In this scenario consider applying additional protection either using fertiliser based fungicide or foliar fungicide application. Consider applying foliar fungicide if none of the upfront (seed or fertiliser based) fungicide is applied.

Canola blackleg spore maturity forecast for Western Australia – 3 June 2020 (accessible table)

This prediction is based on the weather data (January to 31 May 2020) from the nearest weather station and assumes four millimeters (mm) of rainfall per week from now on. The map shows the current predicted dates of spore maturation. Spore showers will start after the spores are mature. The maturity date can help growers to decide if and when foliar fungicide application is warranted depending on disease pressure (regional and paddock - specific) and varietal resistance
