Dr
Gaus Azam
Research Scientist – Reengineering Soil
Portrait of a man in a paddock

My role in the department

Gaus leads Reengineering Soils project, involving laboratory, glasshouse and field-based experiments to address multiple interacting soil constraints in the crop root zone through combining innovative soil amelioration techniques and soil profile reengineering. Previouly, Gaus successfully managed DPIRD/GRDC-funded project, “Innovative approaches to managing subsoil acidity in the wheatbelt of Western Australia".

My background

Gaus was inspired to pursue a career in agricultural science after growing up on a farm in Bangladesh. He is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist (Australian Society of Soil Science) with more than 15 years of years of experience in  Australia and overseas.

Projects

  • Re-engineering soils to improve the access of crop root systems to water and nutrients stored in the subsoil - GRDC collaboration
  • Impact of soil amelioration on weed ecology and control - AHRI and GRDC WeedSmart collaboration

Key Expertise

Soil-plant interactions under different cropping systems for efficient use of soil water and plant nutrients; soil chemical and physical health; root phenotyping; soil water and nutrient dynamics

Qualifications

  • PhD in Applied Soil Physics, The University of Adelaide, 2013
  • MSc in Agricultural Systems, Asian Institute of Technology, 2004
  • BSc in Agriculture, Khulna University, 2002
