My role in the department

My work is based at the Merredin Managed Environment Facility. MEF focuses on crop characterisation and improvement for water-limited environments in Australia. I manage overall operations and liaise with researchers from across Australia. Given the diverse range of projects, one of my key roles is to provide leadership to our team and direction to researchers, students and staff working on the trials.

I coordinate with research leaders to ensure trial measurements are completed to specification and I undertake experiments, surveys and sampling in accordance with protocols. Prioritising requirements and ensuring they are adequately resourced is one of my key challenges.

I also assist in developing and maintaining support facilities (such as dam and irrigation facilities), and support other projects at the Merredin Dryland Research Institute. I enjoy the communication side of my role which involves me attending meetings, field days and project workshops.

My background

My current job at DPIRD started in 2012 but I have worked at the Dryland Research Institute on two other occasions, leaving to broaden my skill set and follow some personal interests.

I have worked as a Technical Officer in the Grain Legume Agronomy project during a high point of the interest in diversifying the range of pulse crops which may be suited to WA growing conditions. I later worked as a Hydrology Field Officer conducting dam site evaluations which involved site drilling and soil analysis work.

I have always had an interest in horticulture and environmental rehabilitation and pursued that interest in a number of other jobs. These roles have given me the opportunity to develop a range of my skills, particularly in the areas of communication, organization and leadership. My current role at DPIRD gives me the opportunity to put these learnings into practice.
