Protecting WA crops

Meet Crop Protection team member– Miranda Slaven

Miranda Slaven

Miranda Slaven is a research scientist based at DPIRD’s Northam Office. She has been working here for the past two and a half years as the lead researcher on DPIRD’s Australian-first project investigating the fit of electric weed control within Australian cropping systems. Miranda is passionate about conducting this research, working to find non-chemical alternatives to minimise the impacts of weeds on grain growers, and is excited to continue similar work into the future.

Miranda grew up in Perth but moved to Northam when she joined DPIRD after completing her undergraduate degree of Agriculture and Environmental Science at the University of Western Australia (UWA). She has followed this up with a Masters of Agricultural Science also at UWA, completing the degree last year. Her thesis focused on the improvement to soil carbon by incorporating plant residue.

In her spare time, Miranda enjoys spending time at the beach, bush walking and camping with her family, friends and little dog, Lottie.
