Broome Tropical Aquaculture Park

The Broome Tropical Aquaculture Park (BTAP) was established in 1992 to promote the growth of the aquaculture industry through the provision of supporting infrastructure. The park was developed in the Port of Broome after studies found that the area provided ready access to high quality saline groundwater, overcoming barriers to growth by providing access to suitable sites, equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support marine aquaculture.

Research

While DPIRD does not conduct any research activities at the Broome Tropical Aquaculture Park, the facility is equipped to support the aquaculture research activities of tenants.

The BTAP is divided into 7 serviced sites available for lease for aquaculture related activities. The eighth site is reserved for DPIRD equipment and services the Park’s common user infrastructure. The seven serviced sites offer opportunities for tenancies ranging from 4792 to 7166m2 suitable for establishing low volume, high value aquaculture operations such as hatchery and nursery production of marine species, production of tropical ornamental species and other research and development activities.

Facilities

The Park is equipped with common user infrastructure delivering saline groundwater from the bore located on the DPIRD service site. Water is supplied through a metered connection to each site and effluent drains collect the treated discharge water from each site.

The saline groundwater bore is over 100m deep and provides excellent quality water with low bacterial counts and low suspend solids, minimising the requirements for filtration and pre-treatment.

Co-locators

The North Regional TAFE’s Kimberly Training Institute occupies the largest tenantable site at the Broom Tropical Aquaculture Park, Site 7. The Institute provides vocational education, training and research opportunities to the aquaculture industry in the Kimberly region.

Marine Produce Australia, part of the Barramundi Group, occupy site 6 at the BTAP where they are developing nursery infrastructure to support their sea-cage farming operations in Cone Bay.

The Joint Venture Multi-species Shellfish Hatchery is located on Site 1 of the BTAP. The hatchery was established to provide research into and supply oyster spat to the pearling industry in the Kimberly region. The hatchery is currently not in operation.
