Katanning was abuzz with advances in sheep technology and research on 30 March 2017 as the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA) hosted a Sheep Industry Research Open Day titled ‘Bewety and the Feast’, with over 185 producers, students, academics and other stakeholders attending the event.

This interactive day was an opportunity to showcase the latest innovative technology and research across the WA sheep industry and what this meant for sheep producers.

Event attendees were able to view live demonstrations showcasing how different cuts of meat and cooking can affect eating, the impacts of meat colour and eating quality on consumer perceptions and Lean Meat Yield analysis.

Presentations from DAFWA staff members included Research Officer Beth Paganoni’s interactive presentation on sheep movement sensors, creating ‘Siri’s rave cave’ with fox deterrent lights doubling as makeshift disco lights in her ‘data disco’.

Other DAFWA presentations included a presentation on sheep genetics by Research Officer Johan Greeff and a talk on new on-farm technology by Research Officer John Paul Collins.
